Ebook About Named a top beach read of summer by Oprah Daily, Good Housekeeping, The Wall Street Journal, and more “Nail-biting wallop of a debut . . . a thoughtful, unexpectedly optimistic tale.” —The New York Times “If you enjoyed The Searcher by Tana French, read What Comes After by JoAnne Tompkins. . . . a mystery—and a gritty meditation on loss and redemption, drenched in stillness and grief.” —The Washington Post After the shocking death of two teenage boys tears apart a community in the Pacific Northwest, a mysterious pregnant girl emerges out of the woods and into the lives of those same boys’ families—a moving and hopeful novel about forgiveness and human connection. In misty, coastal Washington State, Isaac lives alone with his dog, grieving the recent death of his teenage son, Daniel. Next door, Lorrie, a working single mother, struggles with a heinous act committed by her own teenage son. Separated by only a silvery stretch of trees, the two parents are emotionally stranded, isolated by their great losses—until an unfamiliar sixteen-year-old girl shows up, bridges the gap, and changes everything. Evangeline’s arrival at first feels like a blessing, but she is also clearly hiding something. When Isaac, who has retreated into his Quaker faith, isn’t equipped to handle her alone, Lorrie forges her own relationship with the girl. Soon all three characters are forced to examine what really happened in their overlapping pasts, and what it all possibly means for a shared future. With a propulsive mystery at its core, What Comes After offers an unforgettable story of loss and anger, but also of kindness and hope, courage and forgiveness. It is a deeply moving account of strangers and friends not only helping each other forward after tragedy but inspiring a new kind of family.Book What Comes After: A Novel Review :
This is a beautiful and highly unusual novel, like a cross between Marilynne Robinson and Richard Russo. The addition of Quaker spirituality and an UNFORGETTABLE dog elevate it high above most thrillers about teen tragedy. The portrait of small town life in the Pacific Northwest -- this town is unmistakably Port Townsend, WA, where the author lives -- is also superb. Each line is honed, each character true, and each relationship is tested and hard earned, as in life. It's rare to find a book that probes so deeply at the connections between adults and teens, and gets both perspectives right. What Comes After succeeds. I am absolutely astonished as to how a book of this caliber can undermine and discredit itself with something as expendable as an epilogue. You see, I was absolutely enamored with how well the author knew his teenaged, female protagonist and I was completely caught up the story of abandonment and a life lived without being able to trust anyone or anything. It was so beautifully done! The author’s story presentation was excellent, albeit a bit long. His central protagonist, Isaac, was one-dimensional and needed work, but these were forgivable “sins”, to me. It’s because of the fluid writing style that I could forgive these things. The language was simply beautiful, as well. You have an author who manages to maintain a beautiful, almost lyrical, presentation without an attempt to hammer you over the head with a pretentious grammatical display he thinks impressive but is, in reality, utterly garish. So, after all this, why a three-star rating? Let me answer your question with one of my own. Have you ever read a book in which the final two pages managed to discredit every page that came before? The epilogue to this book is unnecessary and should be cut. Immediately. I was embarrassed on behalf of the author. It made little sense. The book could have, and should have, ended with the phone call that was made by the protagonist. That’s all we needed. Not some secondary character uttering some of the most lame (supposedly God-like or God-influenced?) words I’ve ever read. In fact, I cringe from the remembrance even writing about them now.By all means, read the book. But when you see the chapter titled “Epilogue”, check your expectations at the door. Consider the wonderful words you’ve read to date and consider the last two pages to be...well...hell, I don’t know what you should consider them. I’m just going to pretend it’s something that should’ve ended up on the cutting room floor but that the editor missed, and call it a day. Hopefully, you’ll do the same.
